Just for you... If you love sweet gooey cinnamon rolls, or extraordinarily moist banana bread drizzled with cream cheese frosting, or just a scoop of deliciously creamy Kemps ice cream with a cherry on top... you've found the place, on the square of a true Old Western town, right smack in the center of downtown Mansfield. Unlike the name sake from the Little House on the Prairie books, this Sweet Nellies, truly is SWEET! And the proprietors, John and Virginia Cosby ooze with genuine kindness as well!
John and Virginia met and married after their previous spouses had passed away, a short 2 years ago! Originally they had a small bakery in their old house... but there just wasn't enough parking and many of their customers begged them to add ice cream as well.
They bought the Old Opera House, which has had many lives since those days... from a Model T Factory to a Skating Ring in the 1930's and then serving the community as a Service Station... Awe what stories this old building could tell.
I asked about the name... as I said before Nellie from the Little House series was anything but sweet... the story goes... the lady who sold them the store had a dream in it she saw a sign: "Sweet Nellies" in pink! And so it was born... They've added Carolines Dry Goods, because the lesser known of the Ingalls and yet a driving force was Caroline, the mother, who fed, nurtured and taught Laura.
As we're chatting one of the cooks comes in concerned that the crumble had fallen apart... Immediately Virginia asked, "Did you use ice cold butter?" "No," was the sheepish reply... "Toss it, you have to use ice cold butter... you can grate it to mix it" And so I not only learned a lesson on how to make perfect crumble, I learned this couple will only give the best of what it has.
And so supporting the history of the town these two dynamo's work tirelessly to create a dream of yesteryear.
To commemorate this old buildings beginnings they offer "The Opera Challenge" 8 scoops of ice cream, with 8 toppings, whip cream, 8 cherries & nuts! Take as long as you want to eat it but you must keep it down for at least 10 minutes to win the prize (and if you're going to throw up, they prefer you do it outside.) ... a T-shirt
But beside the sweets, if you're a bread lover, as I am... try their 8 grain bread. It is my all time favorite!!!
Their menu includes breakfast sandwiches for on the go, and the lunch menu has the old trusted reliable, Ham and Cheese, Swiss Roast Beef, Chicken Salad or a Salad Bar, but it also includes the unusual Frito Pie and Taco Salad!
Go hungry... leave filled! And in the process make new friends with John and Virginia!
Sweet Nellies Ice Cream Parlor... Yum!
